Doors Open Toronto

Last weekend was Doors Open Toronto, an event where a lot of major buildings in Toronto throw their doors open to the public for a look at some of the history of Toronto. It's a good opportunity to wander through the city and see some cool stuff.

This building is the CIBC North Commerce Plaza, the first major skyscraper in the British Commonwealth, built in the 1930s. It's amazing to see the number of Art Deco buildings in Toronto.

Here's the vault of the CIBC building, It's incredibaly well balanced, it takes a lot of effort to get it moving but it continues with the push of a finger.

The other major building we saw was the TD Center (notice a pattern of big bank buildings here). This is the 54th floor and it was built in 1967. The travertine marble floor is made of one single vein, and it runs continuosly from one side to the other.

This is the single biggest boardroom table in canada, it's a solid piece made from one tree. It's raised on a crane when the building was being built and hasn't moved. The carpet it hand woven to fit around the the table.

The view from the 54th floor, note the high 72 story BMO building next door. And slightly shorter Scotia Bank building to the right.

The main TD lobby on the 54th floor, it's straight out of the sixties...everything is very well made with expensive wood panelling and one of a kind Barcelona chairs, but it still hasn't been updated from the 60s, strange but kind of good that it wasn't effect by the drive to upgrade.

It was a very hot day, kids needed something fun to cool off.

So did the birds,

An endangered peregrine falcon used to educate people, the bird and the trainer travel all over the province, staying together in the hotel room.
Another owl that is used for education,
